European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has stated they will support Greece in battling the major wildfire in northeastern Attica.
In a post on the social media platform X, von der Leyen said “We stand with Greece as it battles devastating fires,” while also announcing that the EU is sending support from its rescEU fleet in the form of two planes from Italy and a helicopter from France.
In addition to these, firefighting teams from Czechia and Romania are also being deployed with EU Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarcic confirming the mobilization of these resources in response to Greece’s activation of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism in a post on platform X.
The fires ravaged Athens on Monday morning, forcing thousands of residents to flee their homes and leading the Greek government to appeal for international help.
The EU officials, in responding to the crisis, stated the importance of providing assistance as a demonstration of EU solidarity.
