At 85 years old, Sofia Mastoris OAM has been given another chance at life after a challenging battle with pancreatic and breast cancer. Her journey, marked by determination, was supported by the expertise of Mr. Russell Hodgson, a hepatitis-pancreatico-biliary specialist and general surgeon at Northern Hospital.

Sofia’s ordeal began about a year ago when a routine check-up revealed the return of breast cancer for the third time. More tests uncovered lumps, and Sofia was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer as well.

Faced with two life-threatening conditions, she met with Mr. Hodgson, who presented surgery as her best option. “I believed the operation would be successful and that I would open my eyes at the other end,” Sofia said.

After careful consideration, they agreed to proceed with the surgery.

Initially scheduled for Holy Week, Sofia decided to postpone the surgery to mentally prepare herself. The operation took place on May 15, 2024, and Sofia, despite her nerves, remained hopeful. When she woke up, the first person she saw was Mr. Hodgson, reassuring her that the procedure had gone as planned.

Her recovery was quicker than expected. “Sofia recovered from her operation far quicker than we thought likely, given her age,” Mr. Hodgson noted. This made her the oldest patient at Northern Health to undergo such a surgery.

Now home and on the road to recovery, Sofia feels immense gratitude for Mr. Hodgson and his team. “The significance of their work and the importance of skilled medical professionals in healthcare is something that needs to be shared,” she said.

Reflecting on the challenges of treating pancreatic cancer, Mr. Hodgson said, “Pancreatic cancer is often difficult to treat, and sometimes the only chance of cure is a long and dangerous operation. For some people, surgery is not an option or is thought to be too dangerous.

“Throughout Sofia’s decision to have surgery and her admission to Northern Health, she was fantastic to work with and had a lot of admirers from all the different people who met her.”

He also encouraged those who wish to support patients like Sofia to consider contributing to the Northern Health Foundation and Pancare.

Sofia’s story is one of hope and gratitude, highlighting the critical role that skilled medical professionals play in saving lives.
