The role of the new Deputy High Commissioner of the Republic of Cyprus in Australia has officially been assumed by the newly arrived diplomat from Cyprus, Nikolaos Varellas.

Varellas replaces Stavros Nicolaou, who has taken up a post in the High Commission in Tel Aviv.

The new Deputy High Commissioner was transferred to the Canberra offices after a year and a half’s work at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus.

His duties include promoting and raising public awareness of the national problem that has plagued Cyprus for 50 years, organising meetings with representatives of Cypriots in Australia, New Zealand and the countries of the Indian Ocean (where the Republic of Cyprus accredited), and meeting on occasion with accredited persons from member countries of the European Union, of which Cyprus is a member.

In addition, he will contribute to the service of Cypriots in Australia regarding passports, visas, certification of signatures, etc.

The diplomat studied law at the University of Athens Law and, at the same time, at the Greek Art Theatre. The subject of his Master’s degree was “Cultural Management of Cyprus”.

Varellas offered a welcome to Australia upon his arrival at his new post, saying:

“I greet our dear compatriots from one end of Australia to the other, and I look forward to meeting them in person and shaking their hands. I am at their disposal for any information within my capacity. Of course, I shall visit Melbourne at the first opportunity, which I understand has the largest number of Greeks in Australia.”

Neos Kosmos welcomes the new Deputy High Commissioner and wishes him a good professional stay in Australia.
