The production of the historical documentary ‘Marinos Harbouris’ has officially wrapped up, with screenings scheduled to begin soon in Kefalonia and abroad. The documentary, which features English subtitles (with a version also available in Russian), delves into the life of the brilliant yet controversial engineer Marinos Harbouris.
Born in Argostoli in 1729, Marinos Harbouris is remembered by historians as a genius engineer with a complex personality. He was inventive, ambitious, and passionate, yet also known for his unruly temper, greed, and selfishness. His life was marked by intense creativity and adventure, culminating in his tragic murder at the age of 53 in the Livadi region of Kefalonia.
One of the most significant achievements of his career was being chosen by Catherine the Great to lead an engineering feat that many deemed impossible.
Harbouris successfully transported a 1,500-ton monolith from Finland to Saint Petersburg, upon which the monumental statue of Peter the Great was erected.
Directed by George Messaris, the documentary brings Harbouris’s story to life, with Grigoris Koumpoulis portraying the title role.
The cast also includes Vasiliki Vlachodimitropoulou, Giannos Vavagiannis, Christos Mourelatos, and Costas Moschopoulos.
The film features insights from historians and scholars, including Dr Petros Petratos, Dr Theodora Giannitsi, Eleni Benetatou, and Gerasimos Galanos, who discuss Harbouris’s contributions to engineering and his tumultuous life.
Given the film’s connection to Russian history, it is expected to be featured in various Russian film festivals.
Details about the screening dates will be announced soon.
