Acclaimed director Pablo Larraín’s ‘Maria’, starring Academy Award winner Angelina Jolie as renowned opera singer Maria Callas will be streamed on Netflix.
The film will tell the story of one of the greatest opera singers of all time, Greek-American Maria Callas, during her final days in the 1970s.
Born Maria Anna Cecilia Sofia Kalogeropoulos, the singer was famous for her incredible voice.
This film, as Larraín said in a media release, is a “creative imagining and psychological portrait of Maria Callas.”
After dedicating her life to audiences around the world, she “decides finally to find her own voice, her own identity, and sing for herself.”
‘Maria’ will be the third film in which the director explores famous women at inflection points in their lives following Jackie (2016) and Spencer (2021).
Spencer was about Princess Diana, when she considered divorcing Prince Charles and leaving the royal family, and Jackie was about Jackie Kennedy’s life following the assassination of her husband, United States President John F. Kennedy.
Jackie Kennedy married Greek business magnate Aristotle Socrates Onassis, who also had a long-standing affair with Maria Callas.
Maria will have its premiere at the Venice Film Festival on August 29, and will release on Netflix in the US at a later date.
Releases for other countries and a date has yet to be announced.
