NSW is set to have a strong Hellenic representation in local government for the next term with numerous candidates looking likely to secure councillor positions.

Over 50 Greek-background individuals put their name in the hat at the recent elections all wanting to contribute to their local areas.

The official results will be confirmed in October, though preliminary vote counts indicate a number of candidates from our community will be successful.

The names below note the various individuals identified website as either being in a prime position of election or firmly in the running. All information is based on the current data published on the NSW Electoral Commission’s website.

Current Waverley Council mayor Paula Masselos is in a strong position to be re-elected as a councillor from the Lawson Ward, with Labor at a quota ratio of 1.22 with 2,334 (or 30.41 per cent) votes.

Fiona Douskou will very likely gain election in Ward 4 of Bayside Council, with the Liberal party at a quota ratio of 1.09 (3,662 votes or 27.13% of the votes).

Fellow Bayside candidate Vicki Poulos also looks confirmed to be elected in Ward 5 with her listed as the Liberal’s number one candidate and their party having a quota ratio of 1.47 (4,979 votes or 36.78 per cent).

Angelo Pippas will be elected to Brewarrina with him comfortably among the top nine candidates out of the 11 that will make up its council, currently possessing a 1.42 quota ratio with 78 votes (or 14.42per cent).

Steve Christou looks set to be re-elected in Granville Ward of Cumberland as his party (Our Local Community) holds a quota ratio of 1.23 (4,775 votes or 30.77 per cent).

Sam Stratikopoulos looks guaranteed to secure a spot in Kogarah Bay Ward of Georges River Council, with the Liberal candidate number one on their list and them possessing a 1.28 quota ratio (4,377 votes or 31.95 per cent).

Christine Petrakis Jamieson is also expected to earn a councillor spot in Georges River (Mortdale Ward) as her party (Georges River Residents and Ratepayers Party) is currently at a quota ratio of 1.75 with 4,721 (or 43.69per cent) of the votes thus far.

Greens candidate Izabella Antoniou looks very likely be one of the three councillors from Ashfield Ward of Inner West Council, with the party standing at a quota ratio of 1.4 with 6,574 (34.98 per cent) of the votes so far.

Georgina Valjak is in a great position of earning another term as councillor in North Rocks Ward of Parramatta Council, with the Liberals currently at a quota ratio of 1.88 (10,443 votes or 47.06 per cent).

Alexandra Luxford looks likely to earn another term on council in West Ward of Randwick Council, with the Labor party having a quota ratio of 1.34 (3,781 votes or 33.54 per cent).

Haris Strangas seems set to earn a place in C Ward of Sutherland Council with the Liberals possessing a quota ratio of 1.75 (10,814 votes or 43.85 per cent).

Kyriakos Panayi, Strangas’ running mate, could also secure his own spot with the Liberals well in contention of winning two councillor positions.

Terry Yalouris looks poised to secure one of the nine councillor positions for Upper Lachlan, with him at a quota ratio of 0.94 (483 votes or 9.38%) and comfortably above four of the 13 candidates currently.

Angelo Rozos seems in pole position to land one of the council spots in Middle Harbour Ward of Willoughby Council, with his Independent group at a quota ratio of 1.36 (2,640 votes or 33.98 per cent).

Ben Krikstolaitis seems all but certain of securing a position in Ward 2 of Shoalhaven Council, with Labor’s quota ratio currently at 0.99.

Peter Tsambalas (second on Labor’s ticket) looks in a strong position to earn a spot in D Ward of Sutherland Council.

Liberal candidate Panayiota Pandeleos is firmly in the running to earn the ninth and final council spot in City of Sydney council, though it is very hard to predict at the moment.

Labor candidate Con Vaitsas looks like he will be in a tight contest with the Greens over the third spot in Canterbury Ward of Canterbury-Bankstown Council.

Harry Stavrinos (Our Local Community) is firmly among the mix for one of the councillor positions in Roselands Ward of Canterbury-Bankstown.

Alex Karavas is in a very tight contest for Mid-Western Council, and he will be keenly watching as the distribution of preferences will be key in deciding most spots.

Oberon candidate Anthony Alevras is definitely in the running for one of the nine councillor positions, though it is too early to call.
