The two “eternal enemies” of Hellenic football are preparing for an epic battle that could have a huge impact in setting the tone on each club’s title push.

Panathinaikos is set to host Olympiacos at the Olympic Stadium on Monday morning in the headline fixture of the Greek Super League’s seventh round, and the stakes are incredibly high for both sides.

The “Trifylli” has had a weak start to their league campaign by their standards and their threat as a title challenger took a major hit after losing to AEK last weekend.

A victory against their archenemy would be a massive confidence boost for the Greens, who desperately want to get closer to the top places on the table (currently sitting six points off first).

For the Piraeus giants, the clash represents a pivotal opportunity to prove themselves a worthy premiership contender.

They will no doubt be keen to score a derby win and continue to apply pressure on first-placed AEK.

PAOK, who is level with Olympiacos, will be keen to potentially create some distance with them as they seek a win against Levadiakos away.

The Thessaloniki giants will view the game as a must-win, though the “blue-greens” have proven to be a difficult side to break down (having recorded four draws from their six outings) and so could pose a challenge.

Levadiakos will also hope they can make the most of their extra rest compared to PAOK, who will come into the clash slightly fatigued after playing in Europe midweek.

AEK travels away to play Panetolikos on Sunday morning in a match that Enosi will be eager to win so they can guarantee themselves of another week occupying first position.

Aris takes on Lamia at “Kleanthis Vikelidis” ground in what will be coach Leonidas Vokolos’ first match since returning to the Fthiotida side.

Vokolos guided the club to their best ever league finish last season before leaving, but he has now returned to the post following Marinos Satsias’ sacking and will be looking for a winning start to his second spell with the team.

Aris will not make it easy for them as they look to build on their two impressive derby wins against Olympiacos and PAOK in the last two week.

Atromitos faces Volos at home in the round’s opening game with the Magnesia fighting to escape from last place.

Panserraikos, one of the sides level with Volos, will be seeking a crucial victory as well when they battle OFI at home.

Asteras Tripolis goes on the road to contest with Kallithea as the Arcadians continue their fight to secure coach Claude Makelele his first win at the club.

The French legend has overseen two draws since joining the “yellow-blues” and he will hope this weekend sees his side go one step better.
