Greek-Australian journalist Patricia Karvelas is stepping down from her role at Radio National to take on an expanded position at ABC, focusing on political content across its audio, television, and digital platforms.

Starting in 2025, Karvelas will serve as the main presenter on the ABC News Channel and will also host a new political podcast.

Additionally, she will continue her role as host of the television panel show “Q+A,” a position she has held since mid-2023, and will remain co-host of The Party Room podcast with Fran Kelly.

“After a decade, it’s time for a change, and I’m ready for a new role across multiple platforms,” Karvelas said.

“I want to thank the ABC for the opportunities it has given me over the past 10 years. It remains, in my view, the most important public institution in the country, and I am excited to help build relationships with audiences across Australia.”

Karvelas joined ABC in 2014 and has held prominent roles on programs such as RN Drive, RN Breakfast, Afternoon Briefing, and The Party Room. Her move marks a new chapter in her career as she takes on a more prominent role covering politics for ABC‘s various platforms.

ABC News Director Justin Stevens praised Karvelas, calling her “a talented and formidable journalist” and expressing enthusiasm for her broader role within the network.

“In 2025, we want her to play a bigger part across all our platforms to cover politics for our audiences. We are excited to see her reach a wider audience on air, on TV, and through digital content for ABC News,” Stevens said.

Karvelas’s career spans the full spectrum of Australian media. As she recently told Neos Kosmos, “Being a journalist is a way of life—it’s not just a job; it permeates every part of my existence.”

Reflecting on her Greek-Australian heritage, Karvelas emphasised the significance of her background: “I feel, first and foremost, Australian, but my cultural roots are a big part of who I am.”

In addition to her work as a journalist, Karvelas is also a proud advocate for the LGBTQI+ community, having found a welcoming space in diverse media outlets early in her career.

Her roots in Greek-Australian media are strong—Neos Kosmos was also among her first platforms, and her family proudly celebrated her early career milestones in the community newspaper.
