Hundreds of Greek Australians gathered in Melbourne at an official dinner to honour Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew during his visit to Australia. The event, held at the Centrepiece in the Melbourne Olympic Precinct, was an opportunity for the Orthodox community to show their respect and gratitude to the “Patriarch of Peace,” as he is known worldwide.

In his speech, Patriarch Bartholomew expressed his deep admiration and unwavering support for the community.

He urged attendees to place their trust in God’s providence and reminded them of the blessings of living in Australia, where political and religious freedom are a given.

“You have my love, admiration, and full support,” the Patriarch said, emphasising the privilege of residing in a nation that exemplifies freedom and human rights.

This visit by the Ecumenical Patriarch has further strengthened the ties between the Greek Orthodox Church and its faithful in Australia.

Present at the event were Archbishop Makarios of Australia, ambassadors, diplomatic officials, church leaders, and representatives from various Greek-Australian organisations, schools, and communities. Notably, federal MP Maria Vamvakinou joined Archbishop Makarios and Patriarch Bartholomew in cutting a cake to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Archdiocese of Australia.

Patriarch Bartholomew’s address also touched upon the challenges humanity faces today, including conflicts driven by nationalism, cultural and religious differences, and geopolitical interests.

He called on Christians worldwide to raise their voices against violence and injustice, particularly in defense of the most vulnerable, such as women and children.

The Patriarch reaffirmed the Orthodox Church’s commitment to dialogue and unity, highlighting the importance of working towards peace and reconciliation.

He stressed that while divisions still exist within Christianity, it is the Church’s duty to strive for unity, as Christ commanded, to overcome historical tensions and divisions.

The evening was a celebration of faith, unity, and hope, as the Greek Orthodox community came together in solidarity and shared their commitment to these values.
