Bill Kordos was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the Law Institute of Victoria (LIV) on Tuesday during a ceremony at the RACV Club in Melbourne, where along with other recipients, he was honoured for outstanding contributions to the legal industry.

As the institute’s highest honour, this accolade is reserved for no more than five recipients each year who have provided exceptional and significant service to the LIV or the broader legal profession over an extended period.

In a media release sent to Neos Kosmos, Kordos expressed his gratitude upon receiving the award, saying: “I am both humbled and proud to be recognised for this award.”

Kordos’ distinguished career in the legal field began in 1988 when he was admitted to practice after earning a Bachelor of Laws from Monash University. He has made substantial contributions to the legal community, including establishing and coordinating the Duty Solicitors Scheme at the Melbourne Family Court. Additionally, he served as a board member at Victoria’s first legal services centre dedicated to representing children.

As a former Alternative Dispute Resolution Portfolio Holder and a member of the LIV Court’s Practice and Education Committees, Kordos has played a pivotal role in shaping legal practices in the region. He is also a former chair of LIV’s Family Law section and continues to contribute as a current member and mentor.

An accredited specialist in family law, Kordos has not only taught law at a tertiary level but has also represented the legal profession before parliamentary standing committees regarding the establishment of the Federal Circuit Court of Australia.
