A man in Greece has been given a one-month suspended prison sentence after he was convicted of disturbing his neighbours by repeatedly sneaking into their properties to smell their shoes.
According to Associated Press, the 28-year-old faced court in Thessaloniki where he could not explain his behaviour, though he is embarrassed by it.
He said that he had no intention of breaking the law or harming anybody, and neighbours testified that he never displayed any sign of aggression during his visits at night.
The man was arrested on the early hours of October 8 in the small town of Sindos, located about 15 km west of Thessaloniki.
A neighbour called the police after he found him in his front yard sniffing his family’s shoes, which were left out to air.
The court heard that there had been at least three similar incidents in the past six months even though neighbours have asked the man’s family to stop him.
He has been ordered to attend therapy sessions.
