The 12th Greek Student Film Festival will conclude next Sunday, October 27 at 11 am, with a screening of student-made films at the Palace Cinema Como. The films were created by primary and secondary school students passionate about the Greek language.
“I’m incredibly impressed that the kids could create such creative scripts in Greek, considering many are third-generation Australians. It’s heartening to see our language enduring here in Australia,” said Anna Bourozikas, Setting Sun Film Festival Director in a press release sent to Neos Kosmos.
This year’s competition theme, “Children Know Everything,” features two categories: primary and secondary school students.
Maria Bakalidou, the director of schools at the Greek Community of Melbourne shared why this festival is important.
“The student film festival is a valuable educational tool, allowing students to use Greek creatively, explore filmmaking, and develop their writing and acting skills. It’s a positive experience in their Greek studies, and I hope to see more participants in the future,” she said.
The 2024 competition began in mid-August with students selecting the theme for their films, marking the start of a month-long creative process. With imagination, humour, and a touch of realism, the students produced a range of films showcasing their enthusiasm and creativity.
The participants will compete for three awards in each category, along with the “Best Short Film Audience Award.”
Judges for the festival praised the students’ efforts, noting their skill in using Greek as a second language.
“Creating short films in Greek is an excellent way for students to practice and demonstrate speaking, listening, and understanding the language through a creative and engaging medium,” said actor Dimitrios Koutsoukos while well-known actor, director, writer and producer Tony Nikolakopoulos stressed that “It’s crucial to encourage students to embrace storytelling and the Greek language.”
“I was genuinely impressed with their language skills and creativity. Each group had unique ideas, making their films engaging and thought-provoking,” he said.
