NSW talent Sam Konstas was unable to continue his case for a spot in Australia’s Test team after a poor first innings in his state’s Sheffield Shield match against Victoria.
The 19-year-old opener grabbed everyone’s attention two weeks ago when he scored twin centuries against South Australia, becoming the youngest player to do so in the Sheffield Shield since Australia legend Ricky Ponting in 1993.
The remarkable performance led to many jotting him down as one of several contenders to feature in Australia’s Test side for the coming summer, with the injury to Cameron Green having opened up a spot in the side.
Konstas had another opportunity to impress as NSW travelled to Melbourne for Round Two of the first-class competition, though the youngster made just two runs before falling victim to fringe test bowler Scott Boland, who dismissed him lbw.
The Greek Australian talent was not the only one to struggle with teammate Steve Smith (Australia’s most prolific test batter currently) also being dismissed cheaply for just three runs.
Konstas will have another chance to demonstrate his quality in the second innings of the contest, with the youngster doing his part to help his state.
In the background, Australia will be assessing him and the numerous other candidates as they seek to sort out how their batting lineup will shape up for the first Test against India next month.
Konstas’ focus will no doubt be centred on performing as best as he can for NSW with the 19-year-old (who is playing just his fifth first-class match) still having plenty of time ahead of him to ascend to higher honours in the sport.
