Melbourne’s Chios Brotherhood of Melbourne and Victoria hosted its annual dance on Saturday evening to commemorate the anniversary of Chios’ liberation, a significant historical event that took place on November 11, 1912. The occasion marked the end of Ottoman rule on the island, ushering in a new chapter in its history.
“Chiotes worldwide deeply honour this pivotal moment in our history,” said Brotherhood president Despina Saranti.

The event also featured an address by Greek Consul General Emmanuel Kakavelakis, who highlighted the sacrifices made by Chians during the Ottoman era. He paid tribute to those who lost their lives under harsh circumstances, acknowledging the enduring resilience of the Chios community.

A performance by the Greek Community of Melbourne and Victoria’s dance troupe drew significant attention. Under the direction of Nikos Papaefthimiou, the group performed traditional Chios dances in regional costumes, earning warm applause from attendees.

Papaefthimiou also shared brief remarks on the unique musical and dance traditions of Chios and neighbouring central Aegean islands, offering a cultural perspective that complemented the evening’s proceedings.
The event concluded with social festivities extending into the early hours, reflecting the community’s dedication to preserving and celebrating its heritage.
