The HANZAC Memorial’s Hellenic Wall is approaching its final stages, with fundraising now complete.
The memorial was officially opened in 2017 by Australian MP Maria Vamvakinou in Laconia, Greece. The inspiration for the memorial came from the Royal Australian Regiment Memorial located in Brisbane and Lt Col Bastiaan who placed at his own expense plaques around the world where Australians fought and died.
The monument includes a stone structure that contains a marble stele with the words Hellenic ANZAC Gardens in English and Greek. The structure along with inner rings are painted in red to symbolise the blood shed fighting for freedom.
Organisers of the Hellenic Wall, including project leader Peter Adamis have expressed gratitude for the widespread support from Hellenes, Philhellenes, and adopted Hellenes, whose contributions have brought this project to life.
The project has been made possible through donors whose names will be engraved on a specially designed marble stele as a lasting acknowledgment of their support.
Among the contributors are prominent members of the Greek community, including Mavis Tregonning, Savvas Grigoropoulos, and Bill Papastergiadis.
When complete, the Hellenic Wall will stand united with the ANZAC Wall, symbolising the historic bonds between Australia, New Zealand, and Greece.
