The Mytilenian Brotherhood of Sydney and NSW played host to a major event honouring the 112th anniversary of the liberation of Lesvos, ensuring the legacy of the historical date continues to be recognised among Australia’s Hellenic community.
The event took place last Saturday at the Mytilenian House in Sydney, with numerous attendees of Mytilenian background along with guests from the wider Greek community among the crowd.
The evening included live music played by Paradise Band, food prepared by Messinia Catering, and dance performances from the Sydney Greek Dancing School, all of which created an excellent atmosphere for the guests.

The Brotherhood’s Vice President, Joanna Tzanellis, led the attendees in holding a one-minute silence in honour of the fallen soldiers in the island’s history who gave their lives.
Tzanellis stressed her joy in seeing the attendees enjoy themselves at the event and show appreciation for the significant anniversary in Lesvos’ history.

“It is important that we as the next generations honour our ancestors, the soldiers and people who sacrificed their lives for us,” she told Neos Kosmos.
“We need to remember them and commemorate the hard work they did for our island and people through events like this one.”
Peter Psomas, the Brotherhood’s President, praised the large turnout, which included the attendance of former Presidents and members of their organisation along with representatives from other associations.

“It is an important day for the Brotherhood to commemorate and acknowledge the soldiers who fought for our island,” he told Neos Kosmos.
Psomas noted the importance of recognising the event and passing on knowledge of their history onto the next generations.
“We need to keep the tradition going and it is good to see the youth trying to understand the importance of the day.”
