The success of the ‘Dimitria 2024’ Festival, held at the Heidelberg ground of football club Alexandros (Megas), has inspired plans to make the event an annual tradition, according to Panagiotis Stefanidis, President of the Pan-Macedonian Union of Melbourne and Victoria.
Speaking to Neos Kosmos, Stefanidis expressed his enthusiasm for the festival, which was a collaboration between the Union and the football club.
“The community’s turnout was impressive. Most importantly, everyone had a fantastic time enjoying an outstanding program featuring local artists and traditional dance troupes,” he said.
Attendees also indulged in delicious Greek delicacies, while children enjoyed specially organised games.
Stefanidis emphasised the importance of the event’s success, sharing that both the Union and Alexandros’s representatives are committed to establishing it as an annual fixture at the Heidelberg ground as part of the Dimitria Festival.
The event was attended by dignitaries, including Greece’s outgoing Consul General in Melbourne, Emmanuel Kakavelakis, who was honoured by the Pan-Macedonian Union for his steadfast support over the past four years. As his term in Melbourne comes to an end, the gesture recognised his contributions to the community.
Additionally, the Union presented awards to Alexandros’s President Steve Tsalikidis and Lefteris Kourtis for their efforts in addressing issues related to the Union’s building.
Longtime advocate for the historical truth of the Macedonian issue, Lakon Sam Kostoulias, was also honoured for his enduring dedication to the cause.
The festival, marked by its vibrant cultural displays and strong sense of community, has set the stage for a bright future as a staple of Melbourne’s Greek Australian calendar.
