The state of Modern Greek Studies at Macquarie University will be discussed at length at an upcoming event, with all updates and future plans to be raised.

The Macquarie Greek Studies Foundation announced that it will host a ‘Town Hall’ at the AHEPA NSW Hall in Rockdale next Monday (16 December) at 7pm.

The event will reflect on the various developments regarding the current situation of Modern Greek Studies at Macquarie, which the university confirmed in May was to be one of many languages that would be discontinued.

The Foundation stated in its official announcement on the Town Hall event that it has vigorously campaigned to retain Modern Greek Studies since first becoming aware of the proposed changes over 12 months ago.

It has involved them engaging actively with community leaders, Federal and State Members of Parliament, university leadership (including the Faculty Head, Vice-Chancellor), as well as many others.

They confirmed that, despite these efforts, Macquarie voted to endorse its long-term strategy toward a global cultural studies program rather than retaining community-focused language courses.

“While this outcome is disappointing, the Foundation remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting students at Macquarie, and beyond, who are passionate about the Greek language, history, and culture,” the Foundation stated in their announcement.

The Town Hall event will clarify the entire situation while also discussing the next steps taken with the Foundation reaffirming its dedication to its mission.
