Greece experienced two rail incidents on Saturday, affecting both the newly launched Thessaloniki Metro and the historic Pelion railway.
In Thessaloniki, a metro carriage on the recently inaugurated line malfunctioned and came to an abrupt halt underground, leaving passengers stranded midday between stations. Footage shared on social media captured commuters exiting the train and walking along the tracks to reach the next station. The incident raised concerns about the operational reliability of the city’s new metro system, which has been hailed as a major infrastructure development.
On the same day, a narrow-gauge train on the historic Pelion railway in central Greece derailed after a boulder fell onto the tracks. Fortunately, the mishap occurred at a low speed, and no injuries were reported.
The train, primarily used for sightseeing along the scenic mountain route, had 37 passengers on board. The affected passengers were safely transported to a nearby station via buses arranged by the local municipality and Hellenic Train, the railway operator.
