A crucial header from Simos Mitoglou in the 76th minute broke the deadlock and handed AEK a hard-fought 1-0 win against Lamia at the Athanasios Diakos Stadium. Despite Lamia’s resolute defense, AEK capitalised on a set piece to secure their third consecutive victory in the Super League, climbing – at least temporarily – to the top of the table alongside Olympiacos.
With several absences in their squad, including Vida, Rota, and Eliasson, coach Matías Almeyda made strategic adjustments. Mitoglou stepped in for the injured Vida, while Odubajo filled in at right-back.
AEK dominated possession from the outset but struggled to penetrate Lamia’s well-organised defense. Long-range efforts posed little threat, and Lamia’s goalkeeper, Ratón, dealt comfortably with AEK’s initial set-piece attempts. AEK’s best first-half opportunity came in the 42nd minute when Fernández delivered an excellent low cross, only for Ljubičić to be denied by Ratón from close range.
In the second half, AEK intensified their pressure. Pineda missed a promising chance in the 47th minute, and Ratón made a crucial save to deny Mukudi’s header in the 75th. However, just a minute later, Mitoglou rose to meet a corner from Lamela and powered the ball into the net, giving AEK the breakthrough they needed.
Lamia attempted to respond but failed to trouble goalkeeper Strakosha, while AEK nearly doubled their lead in the 80th minute when García’s pass to the unmarked Pierrot was overhit.
