The Hellenic Community of Western Australia (HCWA) concluded its centenary anniversary celebrations with a special book launch on Sunday, at the Upper Hall of the Community Centre in Perth.

Minister for Multicultural Interests Tony Buti officially launched Commemorative Centenary of the Hellenic Community of WA, 1923–2023, written by Dr John N. Yiannakis OAM.

This landmark publication chronicles 100 years of contributions and achievements by the HCWA, an organisation founded in September 1923 and incorporated in September 1924.

The book underscores the HCWA’s enduring mission to preserve Greek language, culture, and Orthodoxy while promoting Hellenism within the broader Australian community.

The event was attended by prominent dignitaries, including Senator Dean Smith, Assistant Minister to the Prime Minister and Federal Member for Perth Patrick Gorman, Consul for Greece Eleni Georgopoulou, various Greek association leaders, former WA Governor and University of WA Chancellor Dr Ken Michael AC, and HCWA President Paul Afkos OAM. Over 100 attendees gathered to mark this historic occasion.

HCWA President Paul Afkos OAM, alongside author Dr John Yiannakis OAM, emphasized the significance of the book, which not only recounts the organisation’s origins and milestones but also highlights the tireless efforts of countless volunteers who have shaped its success over the past century. The publication offers insights into Greek migration, settlement, and cultural adaptation in Western Australia, showcasing the community’s resilience and contributions to the state.
