The Greek Welfare Centre of the Holy Archdiocese of Australia is working intensively to pack and distribute care packages filled with food and toys for those in need across Melbourne as part of its annual Christmas Appeal.
Archbishop Makarios, with the leadership of Ioannis Pilalidis called on Melbourne’s Greek community, and the wider community in Victoria, to donate non-perishable food items and children’s toys to support individuals and families facing financial challenges.
Donated items were collected at local Greek Orthodox Parishes and Communities or directly at the Welfare Centre’s facilities at the “Axion Estin” Monastery in Northcote. Staff and volunteers, including members of the GO Youth Chora (Greek Orthodox Youth of Chora), participated in the packing of the care packages with great enthusiasm and dedication.
The distribution of care packages has already begun, aiming to provide relief to families in need and bring smiles to children’s faces during this festive season.
The Greek Welfare Centre’s initiatives have consistently been embraced by the Greek Australian community, receiving heartfelt support every year.
During Christmas and Easter alone, the Centre gathers approximately 10 tonnes of food annually, which are packed into care packages and distributed to 180–200 families across 65 locations in Melbourne.
