Athens has welcomed in the New Year with fireworks as thousands gathered to enjoy the spectacle at Syntagma Square. This New Year’s Eve the fireworks were quiet, without the “thunder” sounds being heard.

The initiative, began with the inauguration of mayor Haris Doukas in an effort to avoid stressing domestic animals and the animals that live in the city.

The technology is based on special chemical compounds that minimise the sound of pyrotechnics, while preserving the light and colours of traditional fireworks.

The night sky was also illuminated by hundreds of drones that participated in a performance dedicated to the heritage of Athens and the celebration of the New Year. The fireworks were followed by a musical and theatrical performance, ‘The Terrace of Time’, that took attendees back to the history of Athens from 1945 to 2025.

Finally, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis In his New Year’s message, stated that “in an unstable planet, Greece remains stable and in an environment of fixation, Greece moves forward. So, at the dawn of 2025, we face the difficulties with realism, so that, with plan and work, we can turn them into new opportunities.”

Mitsotakis detailed the positive economic news for wage earners, freelancers and pensioners in the new year.  He also mentions the government’s goals in areas such as Health, Education, Security, Transport and the strengthening of the Armed Forces. “So we are leaving behind the turmoil and misery of yesterday,” Mitsotakis says, noting that the best is ahead of us.
