Lalor North Primary School stands as one of the cornerstones of Greek language education in Melbourne, hosting a Greek Bilingual Program that is renowned for its uniqueness. With a history spanning 48 years, this program not only keeps the Greek language and cultural heritage alive but also offers students an exceptional educational experience by integrating Greek and English language instruction with high academic standards.
The program leader, Koni Diakodimitriou, spoke to Neos Kosmos about the program’s philosophy, benefits, and vision, which continue to inspire new generations of students.
Can you tell us a little about the history and philosophy of the bilingual program at Lalor North Primary School? What makes it unique?
Lalor North Primary School has hosted a bilingual program for 48 years that not only teaches Greek and English but also incorporates these languages into all subject areas. It is the only Greek-English bilingual program in Victoria and the oldest continuously operating one in the state.
Each class in the program is taught by two teachers—one English-speaking and one Greek-speaking—who work together to deliver a comprehensive curriculum aligned with the Victorian Curriculum. We also receive support from the Greek Education Office, which provides a Greek educator each year, offering students the opportunity to work with a native Greek speaker.
The program caters to students from Kindergarten to Year 6, aiming for full bilingualism and the enhancement of their language skills. Students dedicate 9 to 12 hours per week to learning Greek, not just as a language but also as a medium of learning.

What are the key benefits for children participating in the program? How does bilingual education support their academic and personal development?
Bilingual education has countless benefits. Academically, students develop problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and cognitive flexibility. It also enhances their long-term memory and creativity.
On a personal level, children gain confidence, adaptability, and cultural sensitivity. Learning a second language also strengthens their communication and social skills.
What activities and cultural events does the program offer to strengthen students’ connection to their Greek heritage?
Students participate in a variety of cultural activities, such as kite flying on Clean Monday, Easter egg dyeing, celebrations for March 25th and October 28th, and annual Greek-themed events for parents.
Additionally, they take part in the Student Festival of Oral Speech, the Flag Day celebration, and competitions like the art contest on Australia-Greece relations during the World Wars.
They also engage in school-wide activities such as the Book Character Parade, sports events, music lessons, arts, physical education, and technology classes, with a focus on balancing instruction in both languages.
What makes the program appealing to families from different backgrounds? How does it support students who do not have Greek as their first language?
So far, our students usually have at least one parent of Greek descent, but we welcome everyone. The program is tailored to meet the needs of students who do not have Greek as their first language, ensuring that every child can learn and succeed.
What are the program’s most significant achievements in recent years? Do you have any particular story that has moved you?
I am proud to have been teaching in this program for 13 years. It’s heartwarming to see former students enrolling their own children to share the same experience they had.
A particularly touching moment was the enrollment of a student who is the third generation from the same family in our program—his grandmother, mother, and now he has attended our program!
What are your goals for the program’s future, and how do you plan to attract new students?
Our goal is to improve the program continually and increase student enrollment. Over the past two years, we’ve seen a rise in registrations, and we hope this trend continues. To promote the program, we use social media, but the best advertisement comes from the positive feedback we hear from parents every year!
