The Greek Australian community is mourning the passing of distinguished doctor George Abouyanni, who was widely known for his contributions to the SBS Greek Radio Program, where he provided valuable medical insights to listeners for many years.

Dr Abouyanni, a respected medical professional and active member of the Sydney Greek community, passed away on Tuesday, 18 February after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Egypt to parents Sotiris and Aliki Abouyanni, with roots in Chios, he graduated with a medical degree in Cairo before migrating to Australia, where he built a successful medical career. He remained committed to the principles of the Hippocratic Oath throughout his life while also dedicating time to engaging with the Greek community through his popular weekly medical broadcasts on SBS.

One of the oldest Neos Kosmos team member’s Eleni Karagounis, shared her sorrow at the passing of her cousin, Dr Abouyanni.

“There is nothing more painful than losing a loved one. The body may perish, but the soul is eternal. We will always remember the strength of his spirit,” she said.

Dr Abouyanni is survived by his wife, Eleni, his son, Sotiris, daughter-in-law, Jessica, and granddaughter, Elyssa.
