The Piraeus giants have given their championship hopes the biggest of lifts thus far as they clinched a victory in the dying minutes over AEK to put them in pole position of winning the title.
Olympiacos escaped from “Agia Sophia” Stadium with a 0-1 win on Monday morning (AEDT) in the Greek Super League’s 25th round, moving five points clear of Enosi with just one matchday to go before the play-offs.
The game was hard-fought as chances fell to both sides without finding the back of the net and it seemed destined to finish as a stalemate.
The “red-whites” stepped up in the 90th minute with a goal through midfielder Chiquinho, who hit the ball into the bottom left to give his teams the three points in what could be a season-defining victory.
The loss represented AEK’s first defeat at their home ground in over a year (15 months roughly), piling on to their disappointing Cup result that also came at the hands of Olympiacos.
The Piraeus outfit is now in pole position to secure their first league title in three seasons.
PAOK secured a 2-0 win at home over Asteras Tripolis to confirm their spot in the top four.
The Thessaloniki giants opened the scoring in the 24th minute via playmaker Taison before doubling their lead early into the second half through striker Mbwana Samatta (51′), with the win pushing them five points clear of Aris with one round left to play before the play-offs.
OFI made it three wins in a row as they defeated Lamia 3-0 at home to confirm their spot in the fifth-eighth play-offs range.
The Cretans went ahead in the 25th minute through a headed goal from winger Thiago Nuss, which they built on inside the first twenty seconds of the second half after Lamia defender Giorgos Giannoutsos’ attempted clearance of a shot knocked the ball into his own net (46′).
OFI put the game to bed in the 84th minute via a strong finish by wing back Borja Gonzalez, putting them five points clear of ninth-placed Panetolikos.
Atromitos ensured a vital 1-2 away triumph over Levadiakos to sneak into eighth position.
The Peristeriotes went in front in the 13th minute after forward Georgios Tzovaras scored a headed goal from a corner, though the “blue-greens” managed to equalise soon after through a header of their own by midfielder Marios Vichos from a free kick (23′).
Nikos Athanasiou (who assisted the first goal) then stepped up for a crucial penalty in the 83rd minute, with the left back knocking it in to claim all three points.
Panathinaikos delivered a 2-0 success for their home faithful at the Olympic Stadium on Sunday morning, beating Panetolikos to make up for last week’s shock loss to Lamia.
The Greens pulled ahead in the 34th minute from a corner set piece wherein midfielder Azzedine Ounahi put a ball into the box that striker Karol Swiderski managed to head home for his first goal since joining the club in January.
Ounahi then wrapped up the win with a phenomenal strike in the 79th minute, with the Moroccan curling the ball from way outside the box into the right corner in what stands as one of the best goals of the season.
Aris’ top four hopes went up in flames after being held to a 1-1 draw away against Volos.
The visitors struck first in the 66th minute, thanks to a penalty goal by chief striker Loren Moron (who had to retake the spot-kick), with the Magnesia outfit making it level just five minutes later via centre half Hjortur Hermannsson.
Panserraikos boosted their hopes of survival with a crucial 2-1 home win over Kallithea, moving seven points clear of the relegation zone.
The Serres club pulled in front in the 21st minute through winger Juan Salazar, a lead they held onto for over 50 minutes until the Athenian side equalised through Migouel Alfarela.
The travellers lost a player in the 85th minute following a second yellow card to Triantafyllos Pasalidis, and the hosts capitalised on the advantage soon after with a 90+1st minute winner from striker Jefte Betancor.
