Sydney is all set to play host to 14 members of the Greek Presidential Guard (aka Evzones), who will take part in a series of events for this year’s ANZAC Week commemorations.

The Evzones will feature in numerous initiatives from 28 April to 4 May with their presence further signifying the lasting bond between Greece and Australia.

The visit notably commemorates 125 years of Australians and Hellenes fighting side-by-side for their shared ideals and homelands, with this year also marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II (another conflict wherein the two nations fought together).

The Evzones will first participate in an evening Doxology service on 28 April that will be held at The Cathedral of the Annunciation of Our Lady in Redfern, officiated by His Eminence Archbishop Makarios.

They will then feature in the “ANZACs of Greece Luncheon” at Beta Grande on 1 May, an event celebrating Greek Australians’ contributions to the ANZAC legacy.

Following that will be a Guard of Honour Ceremony on 2 May at the Cenotaph in Martin Place, with them then participating on 3 May in a march and flag-raising ceremony at the ANZAC Memorial in Hyde Park.

Further details on the full schedule will be released in the coming weeks.
