The Australian Greek Ex-Servicemen’s Association contributed to the events honouring Greek Independence Day by hosting one of their own this past Sunday at the Holy Monastery of Axion Esti.

A memorial service was held inside the church that was conducted by Bishop Evmenios of Chora.

A wreath laying service followed which took place inside the church due to the torrential rain.

Various political figures and members of community organisations took part in laying wreaths, with the AGESA praising their participation as well as the attendance of Senior Sergeant Stylianos (Steve) Spyrou and Sergeant Con Matsamakis at the event.

Following that, a minute’s silence was held in honour of the fallen heroes from centuries past.

Nikolaos Makridis, President of the Australian Greek Ex-Servicemen’s Association, welcomed guests and members of the hosting organisation after the aforementioned activities wherein he spoke on the most significant events that marked and determined the final outcome of the fight for Independence that commenced in 1821.
