George Prataris, a highly respected figure in Melbourne’s Greek Australian community, has passed away after a battle with cancer, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, artistry, and warmth.

Prataris, originally from Potamoula, Agrinio, arrived in Australia as a sailor in 1969. In a bold move, he left the commercial ship he was working on and remained in Melbourne as an undocumented migrant. His strong work ethic and integrity soon earned him the support of the Greek community, which helped him gain legal status—a trust he repaid many times over.

He quickly built a life for himself, falling in love and marrying his wife, Stella. Together, they had two sons, Kostas and Vasilis, and later welcomed two granddaughters, Alexandra and Cleopatra.

While Prataris worked tirelessly in the construction industry, his passion for the arts never faded. When Nikos Skiadopoulos established the “Gefyra” Drama School in 1974, he immediately enrolled, immersing himself in theater. He became a prominent actor in the Greek Australian theatrical scene, performing with the “Gefyra” troupe, “Laiki Skini,” and the “Paroikia” theater group.

Beyond community theater, Prataris also made his mark in Australian television, appearing in TV series, films, and commercials. His talents extended beyond the arts—his construction company grew significantly, securing major public projects, including work on the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.

News of his passing has left friends, family, and colleagues in deep sorrow, as they remember a man whose kindness, dedication, and artistic spirit touched so many
