The Sydney University Greek Society (SUGS) has secured its 2025-26 committee with their main message upon being elected all centred around instilling a cultural and intellectual focus to its calendar of initiatives for the coming term.

SUGS held their Annual General Meeting earlier this month (12 March) at the University of Sydney’s Susan Wakhil Building with a healthy attendance that amounted to roughly 50 members alongside some non-member guests.

The Society has for many years organised cultural events in addition to its party and other similar entertainment-based initiatives, and it is an aspect that its newly elected president, Argyri Kallos, stressed the new committee aims to build on.

“We aim to reinforce the spirit of fun that previous committees have instilled into SUGS, while also focusing heavily on the promotion of culture and intellectual connection to Hellenism and the Greek Australian community,” the SUGS president said in a media release.

“In particular, we are keen on promoting the study of Greek and shedding light on historical and contemporary issues affecting students and the community alike.”

The young student, who is in his third year of Bachelor of Arts and Law degree, expressed they “seek to strengthen the values of solidarity and pride in both our Hellenic identity and society more broadly”.

Kallos, who has previously served as a First Year Representative and Modern Greek Department Liaison for the Society, noted their desire to collaborate strongly with other groups to build on their own schedule of initiatives.

“In addition to producing quality events of our own, we are deeply invested in collaborating with the Department of Modern Greek and Byzantine Studies at USYD, our fellow student societies and the wider Greek community,” he said.
