The “Ethniki” is all set for a major two-legged battle with Scotland for a spot in League A for the 2026/27 UEFA Nations League, with the victor taking great confidence ahead of the qualifiers for next year’s World Cup.
Greece host the first encounter at “Georgios Karaiskakis” Stadium on Friday morning at 6.45am (AEDT), seeking a win to give them the advantage heading into the second meeting on Monday (4am) in Glasgow.
The “blue-whites” coach Ivan Jovanovic stressed that they are intensely motivated to secure a berth in League A for the next Nations League cycle.
“There is a very strong desire from all of us to be in the Elite group of teams playing in the Nations League,” the former Panathinaikos manager said to media ahead of the play-offs.
“It is something that will help the players, help Greek football and in general will be an important factor that will increase the prestige of the national team.”
Greece would make history if they can down Scotland across the two legs as it would seal their place in League A for the first time in the competition’s history.
While the focus is purely on the task at hand, the games will also provide crucial experience to both sides about each other that will come in handy ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers given they are in the same group.
Focusing on the upcoming game in Athens, Jovanovic stated he had no doubt that the fans will support them passionately.
“We have to represent Greece in the best possible way and then have the same and more support from the fans of the team.”
