Today, Sydney is hosting the annual commemoration of Greek Independence Day, marking the 204th anniversary of Greece’s historic March 25th Revolution. The event, organised by the Holy Archdiocese of Australia and the Greek Orthodox Community of New South Wales, is set to honour the day that shaped Greece’s modern history.

The celebrations began with a solemn memorial service and wreath-laying ceremony at the Martin Place Cenotaph, starting at 1pm. Members of the community, including students and various local groups, have gathered to pay tribute to those who fought for Greece’s independence.

The Greek Orthodox Community of NSW welcomed the participation of various community groups and individuals, encouraging everyone to join the festivities and celebrate the shared heritage. Those interested in laying wreaths were invited to contact the organisers in advance.

Following the ceremony, participants will march toward the Sydney Opera House, where a festive program will unfold, including speeches from distinguished officials. The public is invited to join the community in this celebration of Greece’s rich history, language, and culture, as the event highlights the bonds between Greece and Australia.

A more detailed report and photos from the Opera House will follow later.
