The #WeAreGreekWarriors social media campaign has continued its annual tradition recognising the Hellenic women that played vital roles in the Greek War of Independence.

The campaign, organised by the New York-based ‘One Bean Marketing’, has worked to honour the legacy of the female warriors during the Greek Revolution.

It also works to highlight the ongoing struggles they navigate today in the fight for democracy, freedom, and independence around the world, encouraging women worldwide to share their stories and look back on the pioneers that have instigated change over the years.

“As a Greek American woman, I feel a deep responsibility to amplify the voices of the lesser-known heroines of the Greek Revolution,” Angie Xidias, owner of One Bean Marketing, said in a media release.

Xidias noted it is their mission to shed light on heroines like Rallou Karatza, Domna Visvizi, the Mesolongitisses, Moscho Tzavela, and the Souliotisses – who fought alongside the more widely recognized women like Laskarina Bouboulina and Manto Mavrogenous.

“These women were not just supporters of the cause; they were leaders, strategists, and warriors. They defied expectations, led armies, and sacrificed everything for freedom. Today, many women around the world continue this struggle,” she said.

The campaign works by using the titular hashtag to share the history of the Greek heroines from the Revolution while also highlighting the contributions of present-day women.

“Greek Independence Day is not just a reflection on the past; it serves as a reminder that the struggle for democracy, freedom, and equality continues today in every corner of the world,” the media release said.

“While we may not yet know the names of the women leading this fight, we must seek them out and amplify their work.”
