A former television broadcaster turned politician is expected to take the Liberal leadership in Western Australia after a state poll that largely failed to deliver for conservatives.

Basil Zempilas is tipped to replace Libby Mettam as the head of the party after narrowly winning the seat of Churchlands in the March 8 election.

Latest counting shows Labor won 46 seats of 59 seats, the Liberals seven and the Nationals six, after the Liberals claimed the final lower house seat of Kalamunda on Monday night.

Speaking outside Parliament before a party room meeting on Tuesday, Mr Zempilas said he would usher in a new era for the Liberals.

“It’s more than a rebuild. I think it’s a total reset,” he told reporters.

The Perth media personality and former Lord Mayor of the city is also set to become the state’s Opposition leader after the WA Liberals’ win in Kalamunda.

The Nationals were the Opposition after Labor’s 53-seat landslide 2021 election victory left the Liberals with just two lower house seats to the Nationals four.

Ms Mettam is expected to become deputy leader after she announced she would not seek re-election for the leadership.
