The Greek Orthodox Community of Whittleseas (GOCW) held a fruitful celebration at its Lalor premises in honour of Greek Independence Day that was enhanced by the participation of the Lalor North Primary School’s students.

The GOCW hosted their event on Monday with approximately 120 guests all honouring the 204th anniversary of 25 March 1821 (the date recognised as the beginning of the Greeks’ fight for independence).

The Lalor North students took part in the commemoration after spending a week in class learning about the significance of Greek Independence Day, singing songs, reciting poems and dancing.

GOCW President Kris Pavlidis heaped praise on the youngsters for adding to the event, presenting each student with a Certificate of Appreciation for their contributions.

“So fabulously moving to see the younger generation embrace their heritage and pay tribute to the significance of the Day through poignant poetry, revolutionary songs, excellent artwork and fun traditional dances,” Pavlidis said.

“Congrats to the students, their families and Lalor North Primary School for their inspiring, outstanding dedication towards Melbourne’s Multiculturalism.”

The guests all enjoyed a traditional meal at the commemoration, which was blessed by the local parish priest, Father George.

The event was also attended by local State representative Bronwyn Halfpenny, with Pavlidis extending her gratitude to both her and Father George for their support.
