A visiting delegation from the Hellenic Police force took part in the Greek Independence Day celebrations in Melbourne last Sunday.

The officers took part in the National Day march alongside members of the Victorian Hellenic Police Association.

The initiative was created to share and promote cultural heritage through the intersection of policing jurisdictions and aims to boost the profile of policing to Victoria’s Greek community.

The Hellenic Police delegation were also welcomed to the head office of AGAPI Care, who sponsored them and accompanied their visit to Victoria’s Parliament House, where they were guided by Labor member Lee Tarlamis.

During the tour, they gained insights into the governmental system and the workings of Parliament House, and heard stories of leadership and collaboration that have shaped the country’s political landscape.

Additionally, the delegation learned about efforts to strengthen ties between Australia and Greece, as well as the recognition of various Greek celebrations.

The delegation were also honoured by a dinner hosted by AGAPI Care.

In attendance was AGAPI Care President Arthur Evriniadis, CEO Mary Gakopoulos, COO Ange Pilipasidis, Lee Tarlamis MP, Steve Tsalikidis, John Mangos, the Victoria Hellenic Police Association and the delegation lead by their president Police Lieutenant Colonel Georgios Tzartzakis.

“The event was a testament to AGAPI Care’s unwavering commitment to fostering cultural ties and honouring the rich traditions of the Hellenic community,” AGAPI Care said in a media release.

They said it was a chance to engage in meaningful conversations, strengthening the bonds between communities and honouring shared heritage.

“It was truly a night to remember, filled with camaraderie, exceptional cuisine and a shared pride in our Hellenic identity.”

“The warmth and hospitality extended during these events was reflective of the deep-rooted values of respect and friendship that underpin the Hellenic community.”

Liz Antonellos from Concise Financial Service also hosted a dinner in Oakleigh.

Bishop Kyriakos of Melbourne and Bishop Evmenios of Chora both attended and presented commemorative gifts to the five members of the delegation.

As the delegation prepares to explore more of Australia, including a visit to Sydney, AGAPI Care said the relationships forged during the visit has “undoubtedly left a lasting impact, inspiring future initiatives aimed at cultural enrichment and mutual support.”Before you go, don’t forget to share your thoughts with us by completing our reader survey – your feedback helps us continue to improve and bring you the content you love.
