Preliminary data from the Bank of Greece says the country saw a tourism surge in January with over 821,000 visitors, most of which were German.

German tourists topped the arrivals list with 95,000 visitors, followed by British at 76,200 and Americans, 48,500.

Travel traffic from the UK was a huge 110.7 per cent increase.

Italian visitor numbers also increased by 19.6 per cent to 45,800 while French arrivals dropped by 45.2 per cent to 23,300 visitors.

Americans were also the highest spenders, contributing 40.9 million euros, 5.4 million more than Germans.

German and British spending did increase by 16.2 per cent to 35.5 million euros and 36.4 per cent to 25.3 million euros respectively.

Meanwhile French spending dropped by 47.3 per cent to 9.8 million euros.

Travel expenditures also saw a rise of 30 per cent, amounting to 214.7 million euros compared to 165.1 million euros in 2024.

Inbound travel traffic rose significantly, with air arrivals increasing by 24.9 per cent, while land border crossings fell by 9.7 per cent.

Visitors from other Europe countries increased by 25.2 per cent, while non-euro EU arrivals fell by 47 per cent.
