The schools of the Greek Community of Melbourne (GCM) organised an informative excursion to the Zoo which expanded the students’ knowledge of animal names in Greek as part of the “We Speak Greek in March” Campaign.
The excursion took place last Saturday (31 March) as the youngsters, accompanied by their teachers, saw all the animals on offer at Melbourne Zoo.
The students had a close-up look at numerous animals like giraffes, lions, tigers, orangutans, and baboons, learning their names in Greek as they passed by them all.

They also visited the butterfly garden and got to share in a most unique experience of dancing with the penguins.
As part of the excursion, students participated in interactive games focused on identifying natural objects and animals.
They were divided into groups as they searched for the animals assigned to them and discovered fascinating facts about nature while communicating with each other in Greek.

The excursion marks the beginning of a series of visits planned for the other school units of the GCM, which will continue to promote the Greek language and culture in an alternate method that gives the kids a chance to use the language in creative, everyday situations.
The visit fell on the last day of the “We Speak Greek in March” Campaign, an initiative aimed at promoting the Greek language by encouraging children to use it daily and beyond the confines of the classroom.
