Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms forecast to hit eastern Greece from Monday have begun wreaking havoc on the Cycladic Islands, with Paros and Mykonos among the hardest hit.
Flooding and road closures on Paros
On Paros, authorities imposed a complete travel ban across the island due to extreme weather conditions. The Fire Department reported severe flooding in Naoussa and Kolymbithres, where torrents of water have swept away debris, including vehicles. Two individuals were rescued from their cars near Naoussa and taken to safety. No missing persons have been reported so far.
The Municipality of Paros confirmed that landslides, flooding, and road collapses have made travel extremely hazardous. Emergency services have received dozens of calls for water pumping, but interventions are being delayed until rainfall subsides. A Fire Department helicopter attempted to reach the island but was forced to turn back due to adverse conditions.
Authorities issued an emergency 112 alert earlier on Monday, officially banning all traffic on the island. Tourists and residents were strongly advised to remain indoors, while only emergency vehicles are permitted to operate.
Mykonos also impacted
A similar 112 emergency alert was issued for Mykonos, enforcing a circulation ban due to the severe weather. As with Paros, emergency vehicles remain exempt from the restriction.
Military on standby for disaster response
With worsening weather conditions expected, Greece’s Armed Forces have been placed on high alert to assist Civil Protection efforts. The Constructions and Management of Natural Catastrophes Command (DIKAFKA), operating under the Hellenic National Defence General Staff, is on standby to provide support in Paros and other affected areas across the Cyclades.
Authorities urge residents and visitors to stay updated on emergency advisories and avoid unnecessary movement as the extreme weather persists.
