Melbourne City defender Alexia Apostolakis has earned a call-up to the Matildas squad as a train-on player ahead of their upcoming friendlies against Korea Republic.
Apostolakis’s inclusion comes after injuries to Ellie Carpenter and Hayley Raso, providing the 18-year-old with an opportunity to gain experience with the senior national team.
She had been in Sydney for a training camp with the Young Matildas during the international window but will now transition into the senior setup.
Apostolakis has impressed in her first season with City, playing in all 25 competitive fixtures across the A-League Women’s season and the AFC Women’s Champions League.
Having started every match except one, she has quickly become one of the league’s most reliable young defenders.
The upcoming friendlies against Korea Republic will offer Apostolakis the chance to further develop her skills by training alongside some of Australia’s best players.
The Matildas will face Korea Republic in two friendlies, starting tonight (Friday night) at Allianz Stadium in Sydney, followed by a second clash in Newcastle next Tuesday.
