An international summit of Hellenic lawyers to discuss issues at the intersection of law, technology, and democracy is set to take place this European summer in Athens.

The Global Summit of Hellenic Lawyers is organised by the Hellenic Australian Lawyers (HAL) representative body, in collaboration with the Hellenic Lawyers Association of New York, the Cyprus Bar Association, and the Plenary of the Greek Bar Associations.

A line-up of jurists, academics, thought leaders, Hellenic lawyers and Philhellenes from around the world, will convene under the theme “Safeguarding Democracy, Rule of Law and Justice – Global Challenges and the Role of AI.”

Organisers say they want to hold a space for discussion nurturing intellectual thought, strengthening global legal ties, and celebrate “a shared commitment to justice” while promoting Hellenic culture and values.

“We are honoured that the Honourable Chief Justice Stephen Gageler AC, High Court of Australia, will be the Australian Keynote Speaker at the Summit,” HAL said in a media statement.

The guest speaker list from Australia includes Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Western Australia, Peter Quinlan, Justice of the Federal Court of Australia, Melissa Perry, and Justice Emilios Kyrou AO, serving as President of the Administrative Review Tribunal and Judge of the Federal Court of Australia.

Former Justice of the Supreme Court of Queensland, Anthe Philippides and Professor Ethics and Legal Philosophy John Tasioulas, Director of the Institute for Ethics in AI at the University of Oxford, will also present speeches.

Differences between Australian and Greek legal frameworks, innovative approaches for legal practitioners and courts in the age of AI, as well as the impact of social media on judicial legitimacy, are among the key topics selected for discussion during the conference.
