Turkish diplomatic and security sources have spoken out on the Greece-Cyprus-Israel submarine electrical interconnection project, telling the Türkiye newspaper that these are “provocative steps” that will not be tolerated.

The Turkish sources cited by Türkiye reported that “such unilateral fait accomplish will certainly not be allowed,” as reported by the Cyprus News Agency.

The newspaper points out that within the framework of the project (AKA the Great Sea Interconnector), “the countdown has begun for the return of the research vessels to international waters east of Kasos and Karpathos”.

It is noted that as reported by Kathimerini, according to well-informed sources, the procedure leading to the issuance of an announcement to mariners (NAVTEX), which communicates the coordinates and time frame of the planned activity, has already been implemented.

Turkish diplomatic sources also told Türkiye that “these activities clearly violate international law and the basic rules of maritime law”.

“Greece’s unilateral steps are provocative in circumstances where the limits of the continental shelf and the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) in the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean have not yet been determined by common consensus.

Ankara has stated in the past on international platforms that such activities are contrary to the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and the principles of good neighbourliness,” according to the same sources.
