The Central Pontian Association in Brunswick will receive $49,500 in federal funding from a re-elected Albanese Labor Government to install an elevator at its Pontiaki Estia headquarters on Sydney Road.
Federal Member for Wills, Peter Khalil made the announcement during a visit to the community hub, highlighting the importance of the investment in improving accessibility for elderly members and those with mobility challenges.
“This commitment from the Albanese Labor Government means that more community members will be able to join in on the important cultural, social and educational activities that the group runs,” Khalil said.
The elevator installation will provide much-needed access to the upper levels of the building, allowing the Association to better serve its diverse membership and ensure all members of the Pontian community can fully participate in events and programs.
“Making the Central Pontian Association’s Brunswick rooms more accessible builds upon the Association’s commitment to supporting its members to connect with their heritage, build relationships, and seek support in an accommodating space,” Khalil added.
The Central Pontian Association has long been a key pillar in preserving Pontian heritage and fostering cultural exchange within Melbourne’s Greek Australian community. The upgrade is part of the Labor Government’s broader commitment to improving infrastructure and accessibility for vital community organisations across the Wills electorate.
“Only a re-elected Albanese Labor Government will continue to support the many important community and cultural groups that Wills is home to,” Khalil said.
