The Federation of Pontian Associations of Australia has welcomed a landmark decision by Parramatta City Council to officially recognise the Armenian, Assyrian, and Greek Genocides—marking a powerful moment of truth and remembrance for the community.

The motion, passed earlier this week, was moved by Councillor Tanya Raffoul—herself a descendant of an Armenian Genocide survivor—and seconded by Councillor Anthony Ellard. The resolution reflects a growing commitment across Australia to acknowledge historical injustices and honour the memory of those who suffered.

“This decision is a powerful act of moral leadership and solidarity,” said a representative of the Federation. “It stands with over 6,000 Australians of Armenian, Assyrian, and Greek heritage in the Parramatta local government area, many of whom carry the legacy of these historical traumas.”

As part of the resolution, Parramatta Council will also establish a memorial garden and plaque to honour the victims—a symbolic and lasting tribute to those who lost their lives during the genocides of the early 20th century.
