As the wait for the Coroner’s findings and recommendations continues following the death of teen James Tsindos in 2021, his family have provided an update.
Tsindos, 17, suffered an anaphylactic reaction and was taken by ambulance to Healthscope’s Holmesglen Private Hospital in Melbourne on May 27, 2021.
He was admitted to triage under category 3 and an inquest is examining whether his medical care was appropriate.
The probe heard evidence he became “wheezy” before suffering a cardiac arrest, later dying after being transferred to another hospital.
James’s parents Harry and Veneta Tsindos asked Allergy & Anaphylaxis Australia, who have been supporting them since his death, to share a message from them for all who are caring for or are dealing with food allergies and especially those caring for children.
“Prior to that day when the anaphylaxis happened, James had not been formally diagnosed as being at risk of anaphylaxis to cashews and had never been prescribed an adrenaline injector,” Harry said in the statement that the charity posted on Facebook.
“James had had allergic reactions previously, however, and had seen an immunologist but, due to COVID, didn’t get all of the testing that was planned done.
“In hindsight, the immunologist probably should have prescribed adrenaline for James and then reconsidered the need for James to have it, after the testing was done and we had the results.”
He said when James had the reaction that day, he called the ambulance for his son and when they arrived the adrenaline they administered at the house worked and his symptoms improved.
They then went to Holmesglen Emergency Department by ambulance for the usual 4-hour period of observation.
“He was alert and reassured me he was fine when I last saw him. We talked about him not running his phone flat playing games while he was there. I never would have thought we would never again speak.”
“The Coroner is looking at what went wrong once James was in the Holmesglen Emergency Department so we can’t comment more on what the evidence showed at this stage, but please know that we will keep up the good fight for James and all of us who have allergies.”
Neos Kosmos has been following the Tsindos family tragedy and will be reporting on the story further.
