Tens of thousands of Greek Australians filed churches across the country this Good Friday to observe the solemn procession of the Epitaphios, one of the most sacred traditions of Orthodox Holy Week.
From Melbourne and Sydney to regional towns, the atmosphere is one of deep reverence as faithful attend the Service of Lamentations and participate in the moving Epitaphios procession. Hymns such as “I Zoi En Tafo”, “Ai Geneai Pasai” and “O Glyky Mou Ear” resonated powerfully, sung in unison by thousands of worshippers in Greek Orthodox churches nationwide.

Earlier in the day, hundreds of volunteers—particularly women and young children—gathered on Good Friday at churches across Australia to adorn the symbolic bier of Christ with flowers. Photos of the beautifully decorated Epitaphios have already begun arriving at Neos Kosmos, capturing the spirit of love, community, and devotion.
At the Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius in Preston, families came together to decorate the Epitaphios, continuing a cherished intergenerational tradition. Similarly, parishes across Melbourne and beyond prepared for the evening procession with care and faith.

Thursday evening saw the Service of the Holy Passion held at the Archdiocesan Church of Panagia “Axion Esti” in Northcote, presided over by Bishop Evmenios of Kerasounta. Addressing the congregation, Bishop Evmenios conveyed the blessings of Archbishop Makarios of Australia, delivering a heartfelt message:
“Tonight we do not merely see a cross—we witness the most radical declaration of love in the history of humanity. Christ loves unconditionally, heals our wounds, and invites us not just to follow Him, but to rise with Him in the Resurrection. The Cross is not an end—it is an invitation. It is the hand of God lifting us from the soil of despair and guiding us into the light of eternity.”

Meanwhile, the Apokathelosis (Descent from the Cross) service took place earlier on Friday, as parishes prepared spiritually and symbolically for the procession to follow.
Neos Kosmos invites all readers and church committees to share photographs from their local Resurrection services.
