As Greek Orthodox Christians across Australia celebrated Easter this weekend, political leaders joined in offering heartfelt messages of support, reflection, and appreciation to the community.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese extended his best wishes to Greek Orthodox Australians, recognising the deep cultural and spiritual significance of the occasion.
“Easter is a time for both reflection and joy; of contemplating the redemptive power of sacrifice and forgiveness, and celebrating the renewal of love and life,” the Prime Minister said.
“The Greek Australian community embody this spirit of love and compassion, which has enriched our nation immeasurably… Our society is so much richer for the contribution of Greek Australians.”
Albanese emphasised Easter’s timeless message of hope — that light will ultimately prevail even in the midst of darkness — and expressed his wish that families across the country enjoy a peaceful and joyous celebration.
“This year, may your celebrations with family and friends be filled with love, joy and peace. Καλό Πάσχα!”
From South Australia, Premier Peter Malinauskas and Minister for Multicultural Affairs Zoe Bettison also delivered a joint message honouring the meaning of the holy season.
“Christians here and all around the world are coming together this long weekend to celebrate Easter, a holy day that celebrates faith, love, hope and the promise of new life,” the statement read.
They acknowledged the diverse ways Easter is observed — through reflection, resurrection, and rich cultural traditions — and encouraged the community to embrace the opportunity to reconnect and renew.
“As Easter dawns, may this blessed occasion bring joy, new beginnings and renewal to all, filling your heart with the spirit of the season,” they concluded.
