Greek Melburnians responded en masse on Saturday to Thiasos Parikia’s invitation to share laughs and enjoy quality Greek theatre after a five-year hiatus.
The group presented their ‘Baba Rum’ performance on the stage of the Doncaster Secondary College and received a warm applause by the audience.
Addressing attendees, director Thanassis Makrygiorgos announced that the Modern Greek Theatre and Thiasos Parikia organisation is making a comeback aimed at popularising theatre with the Greek Australian community’s life at its centre.
“This is the only way to attract the younger generation and I’m determined to make this happen,” he said.
The satirical play ‘Baba Rum’, written by Thanasis Papathanasiou and Michalis Reppas in the ’90s, tells the story of five misfits to condemn greedy, racist and offensive attitudes encountered in Greek society, using humour.
The play was presented in Greek with a synopsis in English made available at the ticket box.
