The life and work of C.P. Cavafy served as inspiration for seven short films and a documentary aimed at celebrating the legendary Greek poet.

The films premiered on the Onassis Channel on YouTube and Onassis.org on 29 April, the date in which he was born 162 years ago (also the same date he died 92 years ago).

A collection of contemporary creators honoured his legacy through film, all of which was commissioned by the Onassis Foundation.

One of the works is a documentary titled “Eternal Desires: The world of Cavafy, from Alexandria to New York”, which follows the journey of the poet through his personal archives and tells a story of love, loss and longing.

It also examines how Cavafy’s work remains relevant and universal even today, giving it a timeless quality.

In addition to the documentary, there is also a series of short films make up a section titled “Visual Cavafy” which presents the cinematic power of Cavafy’s language.

The films reflect the vitality and power of the Cavafy language, as explored by a number of artists.

The section includes films by directors like Evi Kalogiropoulou (“Alexandria”), Elena Park (“Makrya”, “Sea of Morning”, “Ithaca”, “Waiting for the Barbarians”, “The Steps”), Christos Sarris (“Walls”) in collaboration with prisoners in prisons in Greece, as well as artists Jad Abumrad and Mac Premo (“Voices”).
