It was a mixed bag for Victoria’s Greek-Australian clubs in the State Leagues this past weekend, with some sides hitting their straps and others struggling to find their rhythm.

As the rounds tick by, teams are starting to show their true colours, painting a clearer picture of who’ll be the ones to watch in the crucial months ahead.

State League 1 – Northwest Division

Westvale Olympic were an absolute force to be reckoned with, smashing Ballarat City 3-0 in a performance that screamed intent. The Greek-Aussie outfit are finding their groove and look set to keep climbing. This week, they’ll hit the road to take on Westgate in what promises to be a cracking contest. Not to be outdone, Western Suburbs (Panellinios) were clinical in their 2-0 takedown of Brimbank Stallions. They made it look easy, and now they’re gearing up for a tough away trip to face the always-dangerous Corio this round. It wasn’t all smooth sailing, though. Clifton Hill copped a 1-0 defeat at Westgate’s fortress, while Doxa Yarraville were stung 3-1 at home by Keilor Park. This weekend, Clifton Hill will host Sydenham Park, and Doxa will look to bounce back against Brimbank Stallions at home.

State League 1 – Southeast Division

The Greek-Aussie clubs in the southeast division had a belter of a weekend, with all three sides walking away with maximum points. South Springvale’s Aris were immense, storming Collingwood’s patch for a hard-fought 2-1 victory. The “yellow and black” are flying, and this week they’ll face off against Bayside Argonauts in a proper Greek-flavoured derby that’s sure to get pulses racing. The Argonauts are no slouches either, heading into the derby with momentum after a gutsy 2-1 away win over Mazenod. Expect fireworks when these two lock horns. Malvern City kept their fine form rolling, nicking a 1-0 win in the usually hostile territory of Beaumaris. They’ll be back at home this week, ready to take on Doveton in front of their passionate faithful.

State League 2 – Northwest Division

The big “blue and white” derby between Altona East’s PAOK and Mill Park was a proper slugfest, with both sides going hammer and tongs but settling for a 2-2 draw. Neither could claim bragging rights, but they each pocketed a point. This week, PAOK head to Craigieburn City’s turf, while Mill Park face Uni Hill Eagles away.

State League 2 – Southeast Division

Chisholm United couldn’t escape an away defeat, going down 2-1 to Peninsula Strikers. They’ll be looking to make amends when they host Casey Comets this round. Bentleigh’s Cobras fought hard against Mooroolbark but had to settle for a 2-2 draw, taking home a single point. The “yellow and black” will be back at home this week, ready to take on North Caulfield in what should be a cracking clash.

State League 3 – Southeast Division

Waverley Wanderers (AEK) had a weekend to remember, pulling off a thrilling 3-2 away win over Hampton Park. The “yellow and black” are in fine fettle and will look to keep the good times rolling when they host Elwood City this round.

State League 4 – East Division

East Kew’s Olympiacos battled hard but ended up with a 2-2 draw against Riversdale. The “red and white” will be back at home this week, taking on Knox United as they chase a return to winning ways.

State League 4 – North Division

Keon Park are an unstoppable force right now, demolishing Heidelberg Stars 4-2 in a statement win. They’re now gearing up for a massive “blue and white” showdown against Darebin United this week. Speaking of Darebin, they came away with a point after a thrilling 3-3 draw against Moonee Valley Knights. Meanwhile, West Preston face Heidelberg Stars in another intriguing matchup.
